Your Hormones Have an Exit Door (And It Might Be Stuck)

Okay. Pull your chair in close, pour the tea, because I'm about to let you in on a little secret that took me years and an entire doctorate to fully appreciate — and almost nobody is talking about it.
You know how you've tried the magnesium, the seed cycling, the "balancing" supplements, the clean eating, and your period still shows up like a wrecking ball every month? The PMS, the breast tenderness, the rage-then-tears, the skin that breaks out right on schedule?
Girl. It might not be your hormones at all.
It might be your bile.
Yeah. Bile. That yellow-green fluid you never think about. Stick with me, because once you see this, you can't unsee it.
Bile is your body's exit door
Here's the thing nobody explained to either of us: your liver is constantly doing the hard, quiet work of packaging up the stuff your body is finished with — old hormones, toxins, cholesterol, all of it — so you can let it go. But the liver can't just dump that out anywhere. It hands the whole package to bile, and bile is the courier that carries it down into your gut and *out* with your next bathroom trip.
So bile isn't just "the fat digestion thing." Bile is drainage. It's the river that moves your daily junk out to sea. And when that river runs thick and slow — when your bile gets sludgy — everything it was supposed to carry out just... backs up. Sits there. Gets reabsorbed.
This is where it gets personal for your hormones.
The gut–liver–bile triangle (and why your period feels it)
Stay with me, because this is the part that made my jaw drop the first time it really clicked.
Your liver takes your used estrogen — the estrogen your body is done with — and wraps it up neatly so it can leave. It hands that little package to bile. Bile carries it into your gut, and ideally it walks right out the door with your next bowel movement. Done. Gone. Balance maintained.
But when your bile is sluggish, and when your gut isn't moving things along the way it should, that package sits in your intestines long enough to get *unwrapped* — and your body reabsorbs the very estrogen it was trying to get rid of. (The fancy term is *enterohepatic recirculation*, but I just call it your hormones taking a U-turn.)
So instead of letting it go, you're recycling old estrogen back into circulation. Month after month. And that, is the picture behind so much of the PMS, the heaviness, the breast tenderness, the moodiness, the "why is this getting worse with age" feeling.
It's not that your body is broken. It's that the exit door is stuck. And this rarely comes up in a standard 15-minute visit — not because anyone's failing you, but because it lives in that in-between space where the gut, the liver, and your hormones all overlap, and that's exactly the territory I love living in.
How many of these are you quietly nodding at?
Sluggish bile is sneaky. It doesn't announce itself — it just slowly makes everything feel "off." See how many of these hit home:
Tired in a way coffee genuinely does not touch
PMS that feels like it's getting louder every year — sore breasts, mood swings, the weepies, the rage
Skin that won't cooperate — random itchy patches or rashes, jawline breakouts, or just a dull, tired-looking complexion no serum fixes
Constipation, or you go but it never feels quite... complete
Bloated, queasy, or "ugh" after a rich or fatty meal
Stools that are pale, greasy, or float (yes, I went there — we're girlfriends now)
Headaches that cluster right around your period
Puffy and swollen, especially the week before your cycle
One glass of wine and you feel it the next two days
Stubborn weight that won't move no matter how clean you eat
Nodding at three or more? Sweet girl, your bile wants to have a word.
Why this is the secret to balance AND glowing skin
Here's the part I want tattooed on every woman's mirror: you can take every hormone-balancing supplement on the shelf, but if the exit door is jammed, you're just adding traffic to a road that's already backed up.
This is why I'm a drainage-before-repair girl, always. Before we build anything up, we get things moving out. Get bile flowing and you're not just supporting hormone clearance — you're absorbing your fat-soluble vitamins again (hello A, D, E, K — the literal building blocks of glowing skin and steady energy), you're escorting toxins out the door instead of letting them recirculate, and you're giving your skin a reason to finally clear up.
Flowing bile is honestly one of the most underrated beauty and hormone secrets there is. Glow comes from drainage, not just from what you put on your face.
3 ways to get your bile moving
Low and slow, always. We're nudging the river, not blasting it. Pick one this week — don't do all three at once and overwhelm yourself.
1. Start your morning bitter.
Bitter is the flavor that wakes bile up — your body literally responds to it by getting the flow going. Warm lemon water first thing, then build in bitter greens like arugula, dandelion, watercress, or radicchio through the day. Love a shortcut? A few drops of digestive bitters on the tongue before meals does the same job beautifully.
2. Befriend the beet.
Beets are a classic drainage darling for a reason — they help thin and move bile so it stops sitting around like sludge. Roast them, grate them raw into a salad, blend a little into a smoothie, or sip beet kvass if you want to feel a little extra. A few times a week is plenty.
3. Move your body to move your bile.
This one's free and so underrated: a gentle 10-minute walk after meals literally helps move bile and your whole digestive system along. And my personal favorite drainage ritual — a castor oil pack over the liver a few evenings a week. Warm, cozy, supportive, and it pairs perfectly with the wind-down routine you're (hopefully) already protecting.
One girlfriend-to-girlfriend note: if you've had your gallbladder removed, have known gallstones, or you're pregnant, check in with your provider before leaning hard into bile-stimulating foods or castor oil packs. Your situation deserves a personal yes, not a blanket one — that's the whole "test, don't guess" thing I'll never stop preaching.
So that's the quiet culprit. Not glamorous. Not trendy. But foundational — and so often the missing piece when "balanced labs" don't match how you actually feel.
Try one thing this week and tell me what shifts. I read every reply. 💛
P.S. — Getting your drainage flowing before you ever touch a hormone supplement? That's the exact order of operations my Her Foundations Reset is built on — root-cause, low-and-slow, no guessing. Doors open tomorrow. If you've been nodding through this whole email, reply with the word FOUNDATIONS and I'll make sure you're the first to know.
